A diagnosis of prostate cancer is a frightening thing for a man to experience. It's one of those things that men are reluctant to talk about, and as such, it's difficult to get the information you need to stay healthy and stand a good chance of beating the disease.

It is, of course, important to follow any directions given to you by your doctor, and consider any treatment or medication they recommend to help you get better. But there are also a few things you can do on top of this to help keep yourself strong and get well faster. Since diet plays such a big part in health, include these things in yours to help defeat prostate cancer.

Green tea

Green tea is packed full of antioxidants, which some evidence suggests can slow the rate of prostate cancer growth. The studies have been performed on men drinking five or more cups daily, so make sure you include plenty of it in your diet to get the benefits. Remember that green tea normally contains caffeine, which can make urinary problems worse, so look for a decaffeinated variety.

Tomatoes

There's a substance called lycopene in tomatoes, which is another type of antioxidant, so eating plenty of these red fruits can help battle cancer. Cooked tomatoes have been found to have higher quantities than raw, and it's easy to include plenty in your diet in the form of pasta sauces and other classic Italian dishes.

Broccoli

Some studies suggest that broccoli and other veggies like kale and cauliflower have an inhibitive effect on prostate cancer. However, there's contradictory evidence at the moment, so the truth is unclear. Including plenty of them in your diet certainly doesn't hurt, though, and they have lots of other nutritional benefits to boost your overall health.

A mix of fresh fruit

All of the vitamins found in fruit help keep you strong and healthy, and some of them also have specific cancer-fighting properties. It's best to include as many different types of fruit in your diet as you can so you get a range of benefits. If you struggle to do this, blending them up in smoothies makes it a lot easier.

Soy

Yet another substance that evidence suggests can slow prostate cancer growth, soy is also a good alternative to harmful animal proteins. In addition to the beans themselves, products like tofu and soy milk can help you fit this into your meals.
